Eco-Tips # 4-Bottled Water~Tap into Alternatives!

FACT: One in five Canadians drinks only bottled water.

FACT: The longer a bottle of water sits on a store shelf or in a household pantry, the higher the dose of antimony the person who drinks it will receive--Antimony is a potentially toxic trace element with properties similar to arsenic. It is involved in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers, a plastic used in many water bottles. Once water is bottled, the antimony levels rise in the water with time.

FACT: Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million of plastic waster per year and requires the burning of large amounts of fossil fuels to transport and for recycling. Do you really want to be a part of that?

There is a simple alternative to buying bottled water--Purchase yourself a nifty eco-friendly, safe, reusable water bottle and use it! This alternative is an excellent way to cut down on wasteful single use containers, while saving you money!

Don't like the way your tap water tastes? Inexpensive carbon filters will turn most tap water sparkling fresh at a fraction of bottled water's cost! Remember--All bottled water is basically purified/reprocessed tap water anyway! Seriously, this consumer will never buy a bottle of water again. It just doesn't make sense. It's back to the tap for me, with a reusable bottle!

Eco-Tips from Belinda at Eco-logix.ca

Re-think The Way You Light Up. You can lower your personal power waste today!

Replacing just one 100 watt incandescent light bulb with a 25 watt CFL (compact fluorescent bulb) will save 135 kWh of electricity annually, and can reduce associated hot carbon dioxide emission by 193 pounds and saves on your electricity bill too! Imagine if every citizen in Temiskaming Shores, all replaced just one of the old light bulbs with a CFL,,,,
(which is VERY do-able) we could proudly be a part of the solution instead of the problem! You can offset your carbon footprint right now!

Eco-Tips from Belinda at Eco-logix.ca

Recycling tips for all those plastic bags!

There are lots of innovative things you can do to help reduce plastic bags by reusing – check out some of the tips below to get started.

1. Scrunch them up to surround items when you're packaging as an alternative to bubble wrap.

2. Doggie duty--Use them as 'doggy doo bags' when out walking your dog!

3. Take bags to the grocery store to reuse instead of getting new ones each time.

4. Hand protectors – place them over your hands to handle messes indoors and out.

5. Kitchen clean-up – place them under the cutting board for quick scrap removal.

6. Suitcase savers – wrap shoes before packing them with clean clothes.

7. Fill several bags with food or other items for a needy family. (This is one of the most rewarding ways to use those bags!)

Keep bags handy where ever you are so that when you make a purchase you can reuse your own bag. Where?

*in your car
*in your purse or pocket
*in your stroller
*with your pet supplies
